Boring, Oregon does not get nearly enough credit. Fifteen minutes from Sandy, the town is all rolling pasture, old cedars, and views that sneak up on you, and on a warm July evening it hosted one of my favorite weddings of the summer. Sarah and Reed married in a backyard meadow, celebrated on the lawn until the stars came out, and let me photograph every golden minute of it.
Where was Sarah and Reed’s wedding?
In a backyard meadow in Boring, Oregon, about fifteen minutes from Sandy and just down the road from the Mt Hood foothills. The ceremony sat in the open field, rows of wooden benches on the grass and a wooden cross at the head of the aisle. Out here a backyard wedding comes with pasture views in every direction and light that stays soft all evening.
What was the wedding day like?
Country to the core. The morning started with a gown hanging in the window and white cowboy boots waiting by the door, and the guest table held a Bible for everyone to sign instead of a book. The ceremony filled the meadow with rows of family and friends, and after the vows we slipped into the tall grass at golden hour while the low sun turned the whole field to amber.
What is a country backyard reception like?
Easy, loud, and full of love. Dinner happened at tables right on the lawn, toasts ran long in the best way, and when it got dark the whole guest list lined up with sparklers for a send off under the summer sky. Nobody watched a clock. That is the gift of celebrating at home: the party ends when you are ready, not when the venue says so.
