A Sunrise Proposal at Trillium Lake | Mt Hood Proposal Photographer
Some questions deserve a view. This July I photographed a proposal at Trillium Lake at sunrise, with pink clouds stacked over Mt Hood and the whole scene doubled in that famous mirror of a lake. Fifty one final images later, I am still thinking about that morning. Here is the story of the spot, and why it might be the right one for your question too.
Where is Trillium Lake?
Trillium Lake sits at about 3,600 feet in the Mount Hood National Forest, roughly a mile east of Government Camp and two miles down Forest Road 2656 off Highway 26. From Sandy it is an easy morning drive. The lake is famous for one thing above all: on a calm day its surface holds a perfect reflection of Mt Hood, which is exactly why photographers set alarms for sunrise here.
Why is Trillium Lake perfect for a proposal?
Early mornings here are quiet, and calm water shows the mountain reflection at its best before the breeze picks up. The walk from the day use parking to the water is short and flat, so you can get an unsuspecting partner to the perfect spot without a hike giving anything away. There is a $10 day use fee or a Northwest Forest Pass, and that is the entire logistical hurdle. Everything else is just showing up and asking.
What was this sunrise proposal like?
We met in the dark and let the sky do the rest. The clouds went pink over Mt Hood, the lake caught all of it, and somewhere in that light the question was asked. The final gallery of 30 images moves from the quiet moments before, through the yes, to portraits of the newly engaged couple with the mountain glowing behind them. Mornings like this one are the reason I keep saying yes to sunrise sessions.

Pick a calm, clear morning and commit to the early alarm, because sunrise light and still water are the whole show. Have your photographer scout the shoreline ahead of time and stand ready before you arrive. Keep the plan simple: a short walk, a good spot, and the question.
