A First Birthday Milestone Session at Studio 623 | Sandy Oregon Family Photographer

One year old and already stealing the show. This first birthday milestone session happened right here in my Sandy, Oregon studio, and it might be one of my favorite kinds of sessions to shoot. There is nothing quite like watching a baby go from tiny newborn to a walking, giggling, opinionated little person in the span of twelve months. I am Becky Chambers, owner and photographer at Studio 623, and I got to spend a morning celebrating this exact milestone with balloons, three outfit changes, and a whole lot of belly laughs. Grab a coffee and let me walk you through how it all came together.

What is a first birthday milestone session?

A first birthday milestone session is a portrait session built entirely around celebrating one full year of your baby’s life. It is part family portrait, part personality shoot, and part love letter to a year that goes faster than anyone warns you about. I love building these sessions around a few outfit changes and a soft, colorful backdrop, then letting the baby lead the way. Some minutes are posed and sweet. Most of them are candid, a little wild, and exactly right.

Where do first birthday sessions happen in Sandy, Oregon?

Most of my first birthday sessions happen right in my Studio 623 space in Sandy, Oregon, tucked into Suite 2E at 38872 SE Proctor Blvd. The studio has soft natural light, neutral wood floors, and warm cottage style decor that photographs beautifully without competing with baby’s outfit or the balloon garland behind them. For this session we filled the wall with a dreamy sage, blush, and mustard balloon arch and let the room do the rest. No driving to a park and hoping the weather holds. Just a cozy, climate controlled space made for tiny humans who nap on their own schedule.

What should baby wear for a first birthday photo session?

For this session, baby wore three completely different looks and each one gave us something special. We started soft and neutral in a cozy beige knit sweater with a tiny bow, moved into a green floral tulle dress with a flower crown in front of the balloon arch, and finished in a sunny mustard yellow ruffle bottom with a matching bow for a bright, playful set. Mom kept her look soft in a blush dress and dad wore a simple white shirt, which let baby’s outfits be the star without anyone clashing. If you are planning your own session, I always suggest sticking to soft, coordinating tones rather than matching outfits exactly. It photographs so much better and it fits that neutral, cottage core feel we love here at Studio 623.

What happens during a Studio 623 first birthday session?

A first birthday session at Studio 623 is equal parts portraits and playtime. We started with family portraits on the studio’s cream chair, everyone tucked in close, then moved into candid play so baby could explore the space at her own pace. She climbed onto a little wooden toy horse, peeked behind the sheer curtains, and reached for the balloon garland with both hands in the air. Dad scooped her up for an upside down airplane hold that had the whole room laughing, and mom got a quiet moment lifting her toward the ceiling for the kind of unposed joy you cannot fake. I always grab close up detail shots too, chubby toes, tiny clasped hands, the works, because those are the details you will want to remember most once she is walking and talking and asking for her own phone.

Why book a first birthday milestone session?

That first year disappears fast. One day you are counting weeks and the next you are chasing a walking toddler around a balloon arch. A first birthday session gives you a real, honest snapshot of who your baby is right now, the gummy smile, the wobbly first steps, the way she looks at her parents like they hung the moon. It is not just cute photos for the wall. It is proof of a whole year of firsts, captured before she outgrows it.
