Hailey is a Class of 2027 senior, and for her session we went for sunflowers, a weathered barn, and a yellow satin dress that matched the field. I am Becky Chambers of Studio 623 Photography in Sandy, Oregon, and this is one of those sessions where the location did half the work before I ever lifted the camera.
Where do you take senior photos in a sunflower field near Sandy, Oregon?
These were taken on private property about fifteen minutes from my studio in Sandy. An old historic barn sits right beside the sunflower rows in late summer. The blooms usually peak from late August into early September, so the window is short. If sunflowers are on your list, tell me early and I will watch the field for you.
What is a senior session like?
It is relaxed and it moves. We started at the barn, worked through the sunflower rows, and finished in the open part of the field where the fir trees line the horizon and a few horses graze next door. Hailey chose one long yellow dress and it carried the whole session, which I love. One strong outfit in a strong location beats four outfit changes every time. The sky was overcast, which sounds like bad luck and is actually the best light a photographer can ask for in a field full of yellow.
What should you wear for sunflower senior photos?
Wear something that either matches the field or stands apart from it on purpose. Hailey's pale yellow satin did the first, and it worked because the barn gave us a gray and rust backdrop to break it up. Cream, white, rust, denim, and soft blue all photograph well against sunflowers. Skip busy patterns and neon. Shoes matter less than you think, since the rows are dirt and most of the frames are three quarter length anyway.
When should Class of 2027 seniors book their photos?
Book now if you want fall color, and book by early summer if you want sunflowers next year. My senior calendar fills from July through October, and the sunflower window is only a couple of weeks long. Every senior session includes help planning outfits and locations, and if you want to split your photos across two locations or two seasons, I can map that out with you.
