Rowdy and Mack | An Equestrian Session at Golden Hour in Sandy, Oregon

Some sessions have clients who never sit still and never once ask to see the back of the camera. This one had two of them. Meet Rowdy and Mack, two horses I photographed at sunset this July near Sandy, and easily one of my favorite evenings of the month. Thirty images of manes, muscle, and gold light.

What is an equestrian photo session like?

Slow, patient, and worth every minute. We work around the horses’ comfort, let them move the way they want to move, and time everything to the best light of the day. Sunset is the sweet spot: backlit manes, warm dust in the air, and that low golden glow on every coat. Sessions can be just your horse, or you and your horse together. If your horse is part of the family, and around here they usually are, they belong in front of my camera.

What made Rowdy and Mack’s session special?

The sky did us a favor that evening. The light went gold right as the horses settled in, and the final gallery of 30 images runs from big open pasture scenes to close portraits full of personality. Rowdy and Mack could not care less about the camera, which is exactly what makes horse portraits so honest. No posing. Just presence.
