A Golden Summer Evening Family Session in Sandy, Oregon
Some family sessions are calm and quiet. This one had grandparents holding grandbabies, sisters teasing each other between poses, and gold light dripping through the trees until the very last frame. I met this family on a warm summer evening in Sandy, Oregon, and by the time we wrapped, my camera was full of exactly what I hope every family walks away with: real, warm, and unmistakably them.
What does a golden hour family photo session look like?
A golden hour session starts about an hour before sunset, when the light turns soft instead of harsh. We began with the full group together under a canopy of trees, then broke off into smaller combinations: couples, sisters, grandparents, parents and kids. Nobody had to hold a stiff pose for long. Most of my favorite frames from this session happened in the in between moments, while everyone was walking, laughing, or waiting their turn.
Why photograph a multi-generational family together?
Getting three generations in the same place at the same time does not happen often, especially once everyone is grown and scattered across their own lives. A session like this one gives a family a record of exactly who was there that summer: grandparents, adult siblings, their partners, and the littlest one in a tulle dress. Those are the photos a family reaches for years later.
What should families wear for outdoor photos in Sandy, Oregon?
This family kept it simple with a soft, coordinated palette instead of matching outfits: chambray blue, sage, terracotta, and a bit of blush. Those muted, earthy tones hold up beautifully against Sandy’s greenery and against golden hour light, without pulling focus from the people wearing them. I always tell families to dress in colors they actually feel good in. Comfortable people photograph better than perfectly styled ones.
Where can you take family photos near Sandy, Oregon?
A stretch of private land tucked among fruit trees and tall firs, like the property this family gathered on, makes one of the best backdrops around. Sandy sits close enough to Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge that families have their pick of orchards, wooded acreage, and open meadows, all without fighting a crowd for the light. If your family has land of your own, it is often the most relaxed and personal option.
