Rick and Mason’s Late Summer Wedding at Mt. Hood Skibowl | Mt. Hood Wedding Photographer
Some wedding days you can feel coming before you ever lift the camera. Rick and Mason got married at Mt. Hood Skibowl on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and their day opened with a chairlift full of groomsmen drifting up through the fog with their feet swinging. It was moody, overcast, and completely theirs. You might remember these two from their downtown Portland engagement session. Here is a sneak peek from the wedding while I work on the full gallery.
Where is Mt. Hood Skibowl?
Mt. Hood Skibowl is at 87000 E. Highway 26 in Government Camp, Oregon, about an hour east of Portland and a short drive up the mountain from my studio in Sandy. It is the closest ski area to Portland, and once the snow melts it becomes an alpine playground with a chairlift, an alpine slide, and a historic warming hut around 4,000 feet up that couples reach by chair.
What is a wedding at Mt. Hood Skibowl like?
A wedding at Mt. Hood Skibowl is a mountain wedding your guests get to ride into. The ceremony happens up at the historic warming hut, reached by chairlift and a short walk, and afterward everyone travels back down to the base for the reception by chairlift, shuttle, or alpine slide. The venue holds up to 225 guests across several outdoor spaces, and on a clear day the Cascade views do most of the decorating for you.
What was Rick and Mason's late summer wedding day like?
It started on the chairlift. Rick and Mason rode up with their groomsmen, all grins and thumbs up over a hillside of dark firs, and then everyone piled into the historic warming hut to get ready. Shannon, our host from the venue, drove us up to the Upper Bowl in her trusty Tahoe for couples' portraits, which is the kind of sentence you only get to write about a mountain wedding. We came back down to the hut just as the first guests were arriving.
Champagne hour with the clouds sitting low on the ridge turned out to be the heart of the afternoon. Friends who had not seen each other in years found each other again, and my second shooter Lindsae and I spent most of that hour simply following the hugs. The overcast sky gave everything a soft, even light, which is a quiet gift on a mountain in late August.
What was the reception at the base of Mt. Hood Skibowl like?
After the ceremony, guests came back down the mountain by alpine slide, chairlift, and shuttle, so the reception began with a steady stream of people arriving grinning and a little windblown. Waiting at the base was a tent strung with lights and hanging greenery, ferns and dahlias down the length of the head table, and a trio of absolutely beautiful Queens ready to welcome everyone in. They performed several times through the night and the dance floor never really emptied.
The toasts were my favorite part. Rick and Mason sat side by side at the head table in their coral ties and green suspenders, laughing so hard at their people that I could barely keep them in frame. Then, before the light went, we pulled group after group out onto the lawn in front of the lodge. Ten, twelve, fourteen friends at a time, arms around each other. That is exactly what this day was.
Why book Mt. Hood Skibowl for your wedding?
Book Mt. Hood Skibowl if you want your wedding to feel like an adventure your people take together. The chairlift and the alpine slide turn getting from one place to the next into the best part of the day, the warming hut gives you a ceremony site with real history, and the base has room to spread out for a big reception. It is also close enough to Portland that out of town guests can fly in and drive straight up Highway 26.
