Extended Family Photography Session with Mt. Hood on the Horizon | Sandy Oregon Family Photographer
This family has been in front of my camera for years, from newborn photos to holiday sessions, and this August they brought everyone: grandparents, three generations, a pile of cousins in yellow and blue, and a corgi. I am Becky Chambers of Studio 623 Photography in Sandy, Oregon, and extended family sessions like this one are some of the most important photos I take all year.
What is an extended family photo session like?
It is organized chaos with a plan underneath. A couch in the field gave the grandparents a place to sit and everyone else a place to gather, and we worked from the biggest group down: the whole family, the grandparents with all the grandkids, each family on its own, the cousins together, and finally the grandparents alone. With a big group I keep the posed part short and let the kids run between setups. Some of my favorite frames from this evening are a grandson on the excavator and the corgi doing laps in the dry grass.
Where did we take these family photos?
On private property with a straight shot view of Mt. Hood. We started by a metal barn wall, which sounds plain and photographs beautifully because it bounces soft, even light onto everyone's faces. Then we walked the gravel drive past rows of nursery trees as the sun dropped, and finished in the tall grass with the mountain on the horizon. Sunset sessions in August start around 7:30 and give you about an hour of good light.
How do you get kids to cooperate for family photos?
You do not, really. You give them something to do. Walking hand in hand down the drive, running to grandpa, dancing with mom, petting the dog. Movement gives kids a job and gives me real expressions instead of forced ones. For the seated groups I work fast, call out one kid at a time, and keep the grownups laughing so the little ones follow. The whole session took about an hour.
What should an extended family wear for photos?
Pick two or three colors and let each family interpret them. The Litkies went with yellow, soft blue, and white, and it reads as one group without anyone matching. Grandparents in white and blue anchored the middle of every frame. Solid dresses and simple prints, khakis and light shirts for the guys, and sandals for the kids in August all photograph well in a field.
